Cossacks who joined the Red Army shortened their papakhas and replaced cockades with red ribbons or stars to distinguish themselves in battle from White Cossacks, who also wore Kubankas but with white ribbons or cockades.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLater, shortened papakhas, known as Kubankas, were used not only in Kuban and Terek cavalry regiments, but also as winter headgear in the Red Army cavalry, the NKVD and the police.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDuring the Second World War, many recruits from southern regions wore Kubankas instead of ushankas.
