In the September Campaign , as commander of a marching battalion, he took part in the defence of the Brest Fortress , first against the Wehrmacht , and then, after the USSR's aggression on Poland , against the Soviet Red Army. He continued fighting even after the main Polish forces had withdrawn .
The only Polish officer who managed to fight in one single battle both against Hitler's army and against Stalin's army.
