A LEGO-compatible Kubanka (papakha) hat for your LEGO army.

Historical background

The Kubanka is a low, shortened papakha, originally worn by the Kuban Cossacks, from whom it takes its name.

During the First World War, Kubankas also spread among the cavalry of the Kuban and Terek Cossack Hosts, the Wild Division and plastun units.

Kubankas became widespread during the Russian Civil War. Cossacks who joined the Red Army shortened their papakhas and replaced cockades with red ribbons or stars to distinguish themselves in battle from White Cossacks, who also wore Kubankas but with white ribbons or cockades.

Later, shortened papakhas, known as Kubankas, were used not only in Kuban and Terek cavalry regiments, but also as winter headgear in the Red Army cavalry, the NKVD and the police.

During the Second World War, many recruits from southern regions wore Kubankas instead of ushankas. Kubankas were also officially worn by the plastuns of the Red Army's 9th Plastun Division and plastuns in other formations.
