Historical background
The Soviet–Afghan War (1979–1989) was a Cold War conflict in which Afghan insurgent groups, collectively known as the Mujahideen, fought Soviet forces and the government of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Much of the fighting took place in the Afghan countryside. Various resistance groups received support from countries including the United States, Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, China and the United Kingdom.

The war caused widespread destruction and immense loss of life. Estimates of Afghan deaths vary considerably, while millions of people fled as refugees, primarily to Pakistan and Iran. The conflict placed a substantial burden on the Soviet Union and left a lasting legacy in Afghanistan and across the region.
